Zugspitze – Germany

If you are ever an avid traveller and you happen to love embracing nature and if you coincidently happen to be in German-alps then this is exactly for you. Zugspitze happens to be the highest mountain in Germany. Standing at 2,962 m above sea level it is one breathtaking mountain range.

Starting Point : Garmisch Partenkirschen

The hiking starts from Garmish-Partenkirchen which is like 1.5 hrs drive from Munich by train. If you are driving there, Garmisch partenkirschen is the place to start. Once you reach Garmish, you can either walk to the amazing Partnachklamm Gorge or take a bus there. This might take you 15-20 min. Not the greatest of walks, but if you dont like waiting for the bus, you can rather walk there. The entry to the gorge is 2 euros per head, and is open 1000-1700 hrs. The gorge is open after 1700 hrs but no body would be there to help you out if any accident happens. Once you cross the circa. 2km gorge, you need to follow all the way to the first target, ie. Bockhutte. There is this small hut, which sells beer and food. You can get a good breather there.

For a normal walker, it would take approximately 2-3 hours to hit Bockhutte. Make sure you have enough food with you, so that you can energize yourself for the remaining torrid climb. The next stop is at a picturque hutte, called the Rheintalanger hutte (approx. 1600 m). Its a beautiful cottage with friendly staff with a gorgeous stream of water flowing in front. you can decide here either to do an overnight stay or proceed to Knorrhütte.

The route from Rheital to Knorrhütte gets a little rugged. There are no more proper paved routes and you should always follow the marked red dots laid along till then end. You meet a huge valley where there is a distinct possibility to loose your way. The picture to the right might help you out in the event of confusion.

There is a beautiful beergarden in Knorhütte where you can bask in the sunshine and gaze at the mountains. The next stop is Sonn-Alpin from where you can actually see Zugspitze. Cablecar network also starts from this place. The last 300 m from sonn-alpin to Zugspitze is tough and requires adrenalin and dexterity for amateurs. Once the cross is reached, you can be proud of having conquered 2961m ie.,1/3rd the height of Mt.everest. :) BERG HEILIG!
