Hochkönig – Austria (Failed Attempt)

Standing at 2942 m in Berchtesgaden Alps in Austria is Hochkönig. I made this hike along with a few friends in September. Because of the excessive snow conditions and the lack of proper gear we had to detour back to the base. But in general it is a nice hike. The hike starts from Arthurhaus in Werfen(Austria) where they have very nicely laid out boards leading to Hochkönig. From Arthurhaus you have have a look at the amazing Hochkönig massiv range. To start off, you take a left along the mountain range till Mitterfeldalm which is a nice place for a coffee or a bread. From Mitterfeldalm you need to pass through the farm to a very well laid out path. After a while the amazing Torsaule immediately catches your attention. You can see rock climbers ascending on this extremely vertical gigantic structure. A little later the snow picked up for us and the ones with improper gear started slipping and sliding. Unforeseeing the difficulty we proceeded further until i had to look back at my friends who were a good half a kilometer away.. A few locals said there were fresh glacier snow leading uptill Matrashaus. A tad dissappointing that we had to return at this point, but under the circumstances it was the best decision made.
